ALLOMETRIC GROWTH OF PRIMAL CUTS AND TISSUES IN THE PIG Ciência Rural
Siewerdt,Frank; Farias,José Viriato da Silva; Osório,José Carlos da Silveira; Jacondino,Ilo Francisco Ribeiro.
Data from 82 purebred and crossbred Large White and Duroc barrows and gilts were used to describe the growth of carcass primal cuts, of tissues, and of several organs. Pigs were allowed ad libitum to a conventional diet, which contained com and soybean meal. Pigs were weighted weekly and were slaughtered when attained a liveweight over 90kg. An allometric pattern of growth was assumed. Within the observed range of liveweight, the carcass grew slower than the whole animal. An increase of carcass weight corresponds to a similar increase of lean, but also corresponds to a larger increase of fat tissues. A suggestion to slaughter pigs near to 90kg of liveweight is presented, in order to obtain leaner carcasses.

Allometric growth patterns and development in larvae and juveniles of thick-lipped grey mullet Chelon labrosus reared in mesocosm conditions ArchiMer
Ben Khemis, Ines; Gisbert, Enric; Alcaraz, Carles; Zouiten, Dora; Besbes, Raouf; Zouiten, Amina; Masmoudi, Ahmed Slaheddine; Cahu, Chantal.
Allometric growth and ontogeny were studied in thick-lipped grey mullet Chelon labrosus reared in mesocosms from 1 to 71 day post hatching (dph). Multivariate allometric analysis of morphometric growth distinguished three distinct developmental stanzas separated by two morphometric metamorphosis lengths (L-m1=4.46 +/- 0.06mm; L-m2= 28.56 +/- 1.04mm). Body mass growth also showed three distinct episodes separated by two inflections, correlated with morpho-functional changes. First episode concerned pre-flexion larvae and ended around 4.5mm-L-T (14-dph), coinciding with estimated L-m1. It was distinguished by reduced growth, but intense morphogenesis and differentiation processes. Organogenesis and allometric changes indicated that development priorities...

Can weight/length relationship predict size at first maturity? A case study with two species of Characidae Neotropical Ichthyology
Fontoura,Nelson F.; Jesus,Anamélia S.; Larre,Gabriel G.; Porto,Juliana R..
A weight/length relationship was established for Astyanax jacuhiensis (Cope, 1894) (n = 370) and Cheirodon ibicuhiensis Eigenmann, 1915 (n = 701), from samples taken monthly in Fortaleza Lagoon, Cidreira, Rio Grande do Sul, from December 1991 through November 1992. Both species showed a polyphasic allometric growth pattern, each stanza described by an independent power equation controlled by a switch function. For C. ibicuhiensis, this change in the growth pattern occurred at 2.948 cm standard length (SL), close to published sizes for the attainment of female maturity. The change in the growth pattern of A. jacuhiensis (SL = 3.481 cm) was below the predicted size at first maturity, and merits further investigation. Although not conclusive, our data suggest...

Characterization of the early development of Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) from the Paraguay River Basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Andrade,Fernanda F.; Lima,Ariane F.; Assumpção,Lucileine; Makrakis,Sergio; Kasai,Rodrigo I. D.; Makrakis,Maristela C..
ABSTRACT This study described the initial development of Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum, as well as changes in growth patterns. Morphometric and meristic variables were analyzed during embryonic, larval and juvenile periods, even as allometric growth coefficients for larvae and juveniles. Eggs showed an average diameter of 1.79 mm and broad perivitelline space (23.41%). The total length (TL) of the larvae ranged from 3.05 to 25.72 mm, and the total number of myomeres ranged from 45 to 50 (preanal = 13-16 and postanal = 30-35). Initial pigmentation is poor, concentrated at the extremities of the yolk sac. In the flexion stage, the pigmentation intensifies and forms a longitudinal stripe extending from the snout to the operculum and two longitudinal stripes on...

Comparative analysis of the relative growth of Uca rapax (Smith) (Crustacea, Ocypodidae) from two mangroves in São Paulo, Brazil Zoologia
Castiglioni,Daniela da Silva; Negreiros-Fransozo,Maria Lucia.
A study on the relative growth of two populations of Uca rapax (Smith, 1870) was performed primarily to determine the size at onset sexual maturity. The species was sampled monthly in Itamambuca (23º24'43"S and 45º00'73"W) and Ubatumirim (23º20'17.8"S and 44º53'2.2"W) mangroves. Carapace width (CW) and length (CL), abdomen width (AW), major cheliped propodus length (PL) and height (PH) for each sex, and gonopod length (GL) for males were measured with a calliper (0.01 mm). Allometric analyses were used to estimate size at maturity. The relationships that most precisely indicated the size at onset of sexual maturity were AW vs. CW, for females and PL vs. CW, for males. Males and females are mature, respectively at 15.2 and 12.1 mm CW in samples from...

Effect of energy intake on performance and carcass composition of broiler chickens from two different genetic groups Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Rosa,PS; Faria Filho,DE; Dahlke,F; Vieira,BS; Macari,M; Furlan,RL.
In order to evaluate the effect of energy intake and broiler genotype on performance, carcass yield, and fat deposition, 600 one-day-old male chicks from two different genetic groups (AgRoss 308 - commercial line and PCLC - Embrapa non-improved line) were fed diets with different metabolizable energy level (2950, 3200 and 3450 kcal/kg). A completely randomized experimental design in a 2X3 factorial arrangement with four replications of 25 birds per treatment was applied. In order to ensure different energy intake among treatments within each strain, feed intake was daily adjusted by pair-feeding schemes. AgRoss 308 broilers had better performance and carcass yield, and presented lower abdominal fat deposition rate. In both genetic groups, the highest...

Floral differentiation and growth rhythm of rhizome buds of the spring ephemeroid plant Adonis amurensis Regel et Radde Phyton
Liu,XL; Li,JH; Zhu,JY; Yang,YF.
Spring ephemeroid plants complete their aboveground reproduction and growth during the short growing season, and may go dormant subsequently underground. Little is known about the underground dormancy and biological activities of the plants. In this study, we observed organogenesis and growth rhythm of rhizome buds of Adonis amurensis Regel et Radde, a spring ephemeroid plant from the Changbai Mountains in northeastern China. Our results showed that A. amurensis did not go through summer dormancy, but started producing mixed buds on rhizomes soon after the aboveground parts had died. The buds grew in length and diameter following an exponential model with significantly slower rates in the early organogenesis stages, and faster rates before winter dormancy....

Relative growth and sexual maturity of the freshwater shrimp Palaemon pandaliformis (Crustacea, Palaemonidae) in northeastern of Brazil (Canavieiras, Bahia) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Paschoal,Lucas R. P.; Guimarães,Fernanda J.; Couto,Erminda C. G..
This study comprises the description of relative growth and sexual maturity of a population of Palaemon pandaliformis Stimpson, 1871 in Salsa River (Northeastern Brazil). Samples were collected monthly between September 2009 and August 2010. Females were larger, heavier, and showed a greater allometric coefficient (b) than male specimens. Only carapace length vs. pleura length in females presented a significant difference in the relative growth pattern, indicating a puberty moult. This relationship is strictly correlated to reproduction and its success rate in female shrimps. Estimated carapace length in 50% of mature females (CL50) was 4.53 mm. It was not possible to compare obtained CL50 results due to a lack of studies on this species. Comparison was...

The importance of considering small-scale variability in macrobenthic distribution: spatial segregation between two fiddler crab species (genus Leptuca) (Decapoda, Ocypodidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Checon,Helio H.; Costa,Tânia M..
ABSTRACT Defining the appropriate scale is important when trying to understand distribution patterns in community studies. Fiddler crabs are among the most common organisms inhabiting estuarine environments, and despite having a wide latitudinal distribution, are limited by shifts in temperature, current and wind pattern. Thus, many co-occur at a local scale, where their distribution is influenced by variables such as mean sediment grain diameter, salinity and tidal level. Our goal was to test intra and interspecific segregation in two similar and commonly co-occurring fiddler crabs species (Leptuca leptodactyla and Leptuca uruguayensis) at a small scale (10 m²). Interspecific segregation was observed, with L. leptodactyla occurring mainly at the upper...
